Hong Kong Observatory's audio web page in full operation (17 JUL 2001)
The Hong Kong Observatory's audio web page will go into full operation today (17 July). An experimental version of the audio web page, the contents of which encompassed the Observatory's Dial-a-Weather service and Telephone Information Enquiry System, was first launched on 23 March 2001 for the visually impaired. The experimental launch of the audio web page has been well received by the public, with feedback of encouragement and favourable comments. Apart from local and world cities weather reports and forecasts, tidal and astronomical information is also included in the audio web page in Chinese, English and Putonghua. Media briefings by scientific officers are available when Tropical Cyclone Signal No.8 or above is hoisted. Internet users with visual impairment usually read web pages with the aid of screen reader software and Braille display device. In the Observatory's audio web page, shortcut keys are set up to enhance accessibility and to facilitate easy browsing. Such special features were developed in consultation with the Hong Kong Blind Union. Other non-government organizations, such as the Hong Kong Society for the Blind, the Hong Kong Federation of the Blind, the Hong Kong Retinitis Pigmentosa Society and the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired were also invited to provide comments to improve the web page design. Members of the public are welcome to visit the audio web page at http://www.weather.gov.hk/audio/index.htm. |
