New Rainfall Record for June

Up to 5 p.m. today, the total rainfall at the Hong Kong Observatory for June 2001 has reached 1021.4 millimetres which is a new record for June. The previous record of 962.9 millimetres was set in June 1966. Troughs of low pressure affected the territory repeatedly and brought about heavy rain episodes to Hong Kong this month (June 2001).

Today (Wednesday, 27 June 2001), a trough of low pressure brought widespread heavy rain to Hong Kong. Up to 5 p.m., the heavy rain gave more than 100 millimetres of rainfall to the territory in general. The heaviest downpour occurred at the New Territories. More than 160 millimetres of rain were recorded at Sha Tin, Tai Po and Sheung Shui. Tai Po Kau even registered more than 200 millimetres. A rainfall distribution map is attached.

The weather will remain unsettled with rain which will be heavy at times tonight and tomorrow morning, but is expected to turn fine on Friday (29 June) and Saturday.

Red Rainstorm Warning Signal :
2:35 p.m. and remain effective up to 5 p.m.

Special Announcement of Flooding in Northern New Territories :
2:00 p.m. and remain effective up to 5 p.m.

Landslip Warning :
3:45 p.m. and remain effective up to 5 p.m.

Thunderstorm Warning :
9:50 p.m. 26 June and remains effective up to 5 p.m.

Strong Monsoon Signal :
1:30 a.m. and remain effective up to 5 p.m.
