The Rainstorm on 7 June 2001

The trough of low pressure over the south China coast continued to bring heavy rain to Hong Kong today (Thursday, 7 June 2001).

The heavy downpour this morning occurred mainly in the northwestern part of the New Territories. The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Special Announcement of Flooding in Northern New Territories at 4:20 a.m. and the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 5:00 a.m.

Up to 5 p.m., more than 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded generally over the northwestern part of the New Territories. Yuen Long, Kam Tin and San Tin registered more than 200 millimetres of rainfall. A rainfall distribution map for today is attached.

The weather is expected to remain unsettled with occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms tomorrow.

Up to 5 p.m., the effective time of the warning signals issued today is summarized as follows :

Special Announcement of Flooding in Northern New Territories: 4:20 a.m. to 3:35 p.m.

Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal : 5:00 a.m. and remains effective up to 5 p.m.

Thunderstorm Warning : 11:30 p.m. 6 June and remains effective up to 5 p.m. today.
