Rainstorm Warning Signals Issued on 5-6 June 2001

The trough of low pressure over the south China coast brought widespread heavy rain to Hong Kong last night (Tuesday, 5 June 2001) and early this morning (Wednesday, 6 June 2001).

The heaviest downpour occurred at 6-8 p.m. last evening and 3-6 a.m. this morning. The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 6:05 p.m. yesterday. It was effective until 11:30 a.m. this morning. The Amber Rainstorm Warning spanned a period of 17 hours and 25 minutes, which was the longest period on record since the revised Rainstorm Warning System was operational in 1998. More than 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over the urban areas, Sai Kung and the eastern part of Lantau Island when the Amber Rainstorm Warning was in force. Parts of the Hong Kong Island even recorded more than 160 millimetres of rainfall. A rainfall distribution map is shown below.

Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal :
6:05 p.m. 5 June to 11:30 a.m. 6 June

Thunderstorm Warning :
1:45 p.m. 5 June to 12:00 noon 6 June

Landslip Warning :
6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 6 June

The weather is expected to remain unsettled with scattered showers in the next couple of days.
