The lowest temperature this winter 9.8 degrees (28 January 2001)

A winter monsoon continues to bring cold weather to Hong Kong today (28 January). At the Hong Kong Observatory, the mercury dropped to 9.8 degrees this morning, the lowest recorded so far this winter. In the New Territories, minimum temperatures were generally in the region of 8 degrees.

The cold weather will persist tomorrow (29 January). The minimum temperature in the urban areas will be about 10 degrees and it will be a couple of degree lower in the New Territories. The Cold Weather Warning is in force. The following precautions should be noted:

1. If you must go out, please avoid prolonged exposure to wintry winds.

2. If you know of elderly or persons with chronic medical conditions staying alone, please call or visit them occasionally to check if they need any assistance.

3. Make sure heaters are safe before use, and place them away from any combustibles.

4. Whatever the temperature, please ensure that there is plenty of fresh air in your room when you are using an old-type gas water heater.
