The Hong Kong Observatory forecasts that temperatures will plummet early next week. This could well turn out to be the most intense cold surge so far this winter. Under the influence of northerly winds, temperatures on Saturday (13 January) were already falling and even colder air from the mainland would continue to spread south towards the south China coastal areas in the next few days. Locally, temperatures in the urban areas on Monday (15 January) and Tuesday (16 January) will drop to around 10 degrees, and a further few degrees lower in the New Territories. People are advised to put on warm clothes and be aware of low body temperature due to the cold weather. If you know of elderly or persons with chronic medical conditions staying alone, please call or visit them occasionally to check if they need any assistance. Make sure heaters are safe before use.
