The Observatory launches a new version of the Location-specific Lightning Alert Webpage

The Observatory launches a new beta version of the Location-specific Lightning Alert Webpage (LLAW) today (29 June 2016). Through a one-stop Geographical Information System (GIS) platform to display lightning and relevant information, it is now more convenient to use the webpage. Users can specify a lightning alert region with radius up to 30 kilometers in Hong Kong or in the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta. When lightning stroke is detected within the specified region, an alarm will be sounded to alert users to watch out for the lightning activities in the vicinity. The webpage provides various options for outdoor activity sites, geographical information and simple arithmetic tools to facilitate members of the public to monitor the development of thunderstorms around their current locations.
