"Rainfall Nowcast for the Pearl River Delta Region" Webpage Revamped

22 June 2010

The Observatory launched a new version of the "Rainfall Nowcast for the Pearl River Delta Region" webpage today (22 June 2010). The new webpage features a four-dimensional (4D) space-time map of the globe with user-selectable geographical information content. With this design, members of the public can watch directly using an ordinary web browser the evolution within the next two hours of the forecast rainfall distribution over the Pearl River Delta region, which allows people travelling to and from Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong to grasp the changing rain conditions more quickly and easily.

Through the graphical interface of the 4D map, users can zoom-in, zoom-out, configure panoramic view and animate the forecast maps of rainfall distribution. This enables the users to appreciate the spatial coverage and the movement trends of the rain areas, as well as the expected rainfall amount. The installation of the web browser plug-in required by the 4D map is straight-forward and further information can be found in the Method to Use section of the user guide located near the bottom of the webpage.
