Launch of a New Version of World Weather Information Service Website

A new version of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) World Weather Information Service (WWIS) website (https://worldweather.wmo.int) (Figure 1) was launched today (24 Aug 2017). It was enhanced with more contents including current weather, times of sunrise and sunset for world cities, as well as global satellite imageries. The new WWIS website also features a new user interface to facilitate quick search of cities, and adopts responsive web design that provides better browsing experience for mobile users. Update versions of MyWorldWeather app (Figure 2) featuring new contents of the WWIS website can be downloaded in the stores for iPhone and Android platforms respectively.

The WWIS website was developed and maintained by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) on behalf of the WMO to provide official weather information issued by national meteorological and hydrological services worldwide. The website was the world's first website featuring official city forecasts, and was declared operational in 2005. With the launch of MyWorldWeather mobile app on iPhone and Android platforms, the WWIS started serving smartphone users since 2011 and 2013 respectively. At present, 135 WMO members provide official weather information covering more than 2,100 cities on the WWIS and supporting 11 languages viz. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Members of the public are encouraged to use the website or app to obtain official weather information when planning for holidays or business abroad.
