Hong Kong Observatory Website Adopts the Latest Web Accessibility Design Standard

31 December 2012

To facilitate members of the public in browsing the Observatory website, the Hong Kong Observatory had enhanced its website to conform to the latest requirements of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA.

Over the years, the Observatory has been actively pursuing web accessibility design. The Observatory was granted the Web Care Awards by the Internet Professional Association (iProA) in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011 respectively in recognition of the efforts paid in building no-barrier website to provide needy communities with equal opportunities in sharing the benefits brought about by the development of Internet.

Corporate social responsibility is fundamental to the Observatory's culture and core value. The website of the Hong Kong Observatory had been enhanced with web accessibility design since its launch in 1996. To facilitate browsing of the website by all sectors of the community, the Observatory website had been introduced with functions such as audio webpages, alternative texts for images and banners, and sufficient color contrast, etc.

The Observatory will ensure that commonly used webpages* on its website conforms as far as possible to the W3C WCAG 2.0 Level AA requirements. Individual less commonly used webpages with archive materials may not incorporate all the accessibility features**. You are welcome to contact us by email (mailbox@hko.gov.hk) if you wish to acquire the information in a more accessible format.

Remarks:
* All commonly used webpages amount to 99% of the total page views of the Observatory website.

** According to the "Guidelines on Dissemination of Information through Government Websites", government websites, except archive materials, are required to validate to W3C WCAG 2.0 Level AA conformance within practicable means from 2013 onwards.
