23 March 2011
The Italian-language Google Earth version of the World Weather Information Service (WWIS) website (http://wwis.meteoam.it/future/index1.htm) was launched today (23 March) by the the Servizio Meteorologico dell' Aeronautica Militare Italiana in collaboration with the Hong Kong Observatory under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). The new website allows Italian-speaking communities to view the latest weather information more readily in their own language.
The Google Earth version of WWIS allows users to freely move around a virtual globe by changing the viewing angle and position. It features a versatile "fly-over" function to any part of the world and a quick search function. The Google Earth version of WWIS was also showcased in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The WWIS website (http://worldweather.wmo.int/) aims at providing authoritative and reliable official weather forecast and information around the world to all Internet users. In 2008, WWIS won the prestigious Stockholm Challenge Award in the Environment Category. At present, 127 WMO members provide official weather forecasts for more than 1,300 cities on the website in nine different languages. Climatological data for the cities are also provided to help users in planning their travel months in advance. Following the hyperlinks on the website, users can also visit the websites of the meteorological departments of different regions to find out more details on their forecasts. Since the launch of WWIS in 2001, the cumulative total number of page visits to WWIS has reached 850 million in 2010. Please visit the Italian Google Earth version of the WWIS website via the linkhttp://wwis.meteoam.it/future/index1.htm or via WWIS English website (http://worldweather.wmo.int/globe/) and click "Italiano".
