Bringing Youth Messages of Hong Kong
to
the World Climate Conference-3 (WCC-3)


TheWorld Meteorological Organization (WMO) and theGlobal Learning Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program invite young people living in each WMO Member State or Territory to create compelling short messages on the topic: Youth Working to Solve Local Problems through Weather and Climate Research.

To contribute to this meaningful initiative, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) cordially invites youth (from 14- 18 years old) of Hong Kong to participate and submit their messages (no more than 300 words) on the above topic. The Observatory will review the youth messages from Hong Kong and select ONE suitable entry for submission to the WMO and GLOBE program.

WMO and GLOBE will further review the youth messages recommended by different WMO Members. A selection of them will be displayed at the World Climate Conference (WCC-3) in Geneva, Switzerland from 31 August to 4 September 2009 for sharing with policy-makers and experts attending the Conference. These messages will also be posted on the WMO WCC-3 and GLOBE websites. Youth whose message has been selected will also be awarded a WMO Certificate in promoting Climate Literacy.


Submission and Information

Each participant can only submit one entry, written in Chinese or in English and in no more than 300 words.

The entry should be in an electronic word processor file format (doc or txt). Participants can also send a short video message to accompany their written entry. The video clip should be no more than three minutes in total duration, with a file size of not exceeding 5MB. The video clip should be in Chinese or English and submitted in one of the following file formats: avi, mp4, or mpeg.

Participants shouldsubmitthe duly completed entry form (click here to download), a duly completed photographic release and consent agreement form (click here to download),a participants photo (in jpeg format, file size of less than 500KB) and send them to the Hong Kong Observatory by email (climchge@hko.gov.hk) with the subject WCC-3 Youth message Hong Kong.

All entries have to reach the Observatory no later than 5pm, Monday, 22 June 2009.

For submissions with text accompanied by video, please send your entry on a CD or DVD by hand or by post to reach the Hong Kong Observatory Resource Centre (Units 2304-2309, 23/F Miramar Tower, 132 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon) on or before the stipulated deadline.

Late submissions will not be considered.


Selection criteria

  • The message clearly and convincingly illustrates how weather and climate research can be used to address local issues;
  • The message is scientifically accurate;
  • The message demonstrates creativity; and
  • The message is clearly written and nicely produced.

Decisions of the Hong Kong Observatory in selecting the one message representing Hong Kong, China to WMO and GLOBE shall be final.

The subsequent selection by WMO and GLOBE will be announced around 15 August 2009 and the successful participant will be informed accordingly.
