Satellite Imagery of Interest : Cloud Streets and Vortex Street

7 January 2016

A new Satellite Imagery of Interest is now available on the Observatory's website. The image shows cloud streets and vortex street near Jeju Island.

Cloud Vortex Street

On 25 December 2015, satellite imagery shows north-south oriented strip-like feature known as “cloud streets” over the seas south of Jeju Island, Korea under the background of high northerly winds. There is also a vortex street on the lee side of Jeju Island. These vortices, known as von Karman vortices, form when the northerlies are blocked by the island and the air flows around the island from the lateral sides. (The satellite imagery was captured by Himawari-8 satellite of Japan Meteorological Agency)
