Official Opening of the Observatory's Sheung Shui Automatic Weather Station at De La Salle Secondary School, New Territories

The Sheung Shui Automatic Weather Station, jointly built and operated by the Hong Kong Observatory and the De La Salle Secondary School, New Territories, was officially opened on 18 November 2004. The station provides valuable weather information for the Sheung Shui area to the public and tourists.

To commemorate the event, the Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr. C.Y. Lam, and the Principal of De La Salle Secondary School, Mr. Eric W. H. Ku, officiated at the opening ceremony. Mr. Lam also gave a talk on "Climate change and ecology" and had a lively discussion on the topic with students. Apart from the teachers and students from De La Salle Secondary School, New Territories, over 100 teachers and students from adjacent schools also attended the talk.

Mr. Lam said, "The weather data collected at the Sheung Shui Automatic Weather Station will be used for studying the long term climate change in Hong Kong a hundred year from now."

The automatic weather station is equipped with instruments for measuring temperature, relative humidity, air pressure and rainfall. The data recorded is displayed in real time on the HKO website to provide the public and tourists with the latest weather information to plan their activities.

Additional weather observing instruments have also been installed at the station for use as teaching tools by the teachers. The Principal of the school, Mr. Ku, said, "The instruments supplied by the Hong Kong Observatory facilitated a multifarious learning environment for the students. Commencing this semester, Form 4 students participating in the "Meteorological Ecology Scheme" can acquire a basic knowledge of weather and climate through classroom teaching and practicals."
