How does rain affect the ambient radiation level ?

Initially, rain will wash down natural radioactive material in the air to the ground, raising the ambient radiation level in a very short time (see case 1 given here). However, after prolonged rainfall, there will be less natural radioactive material in the air. This lowers the ambient radiation from its peak level for some time before it returns to normal.
