What is the objective of emergency radiation monitoring?

In the unlikely event of a nuclear accident or a suspected nuclear accident at Guangdong Nuclear Power Station and Lingao Nuclear Power Station, the objective of emergency radiation monitoring is to obtain timely and comprehensive information on the environmental radiation levels in Hong Kong for assessing nuclear accident consequences and considering necessary countermeasures.

Key responsibilities of the Hong Kong Observatory are:

1. co-ordinating all radiation monitoring, sampling and analyses;
2. assessing the nature, magnitude and extent of the nuclear accident; and
3. advising on the necessary countermeasures.
