In response to media reports today (April 1) on the reporting mechanism and radiation data exchange between Hong Kong and the Mainland, the Hong Kong Observatory points out that an information exchange mechanism has already been in place between Hong Kong and the Guangdong authority.
In the event of a nuclear emergency at the Guangdong Nuclear Power Station or Lingao Nuclear Power Station, the Prevention and Emergency Administrative Commission Office of Guangdong Province for Nuclear Accident of Civil Nuclear Facility (PEACO, GD) will notify the Observatory and the exchange of radiation data between Hong Kong and Guangdong will commence.
To ensure the effectiveness of this mechanism, the Observatory conducts communication tests with PEACO, GD on a monthly basis, which involve the exchange of test data via computers, information via fax and verbal communication via telephone.
