Real-time ambient gamma radiation levels in Hong Kong released by the Observatory

16 March 2011

The Hong Kong Observatory operates a network of ten stations (Figure 1) to monitor the ambient gamma radiation levels in Hong Kong round-the-clock. Starting today (16 March), real-time, hourly average data from these monitoring stations will be available at the following web page (Figure 2):

The ambient gamma radiation levels may vary due to natural causes, which include geological and meteorological conditions such as rainfall, pressure and wind. In Hong Kong, the normal background radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
