Meteorological authorities of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao enjoy silver jubilee and launch Greater Pearl River Delta Weather Website

26 January 2011

Meteorologists from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao met at the Hong Kong Observatory today (January 26) for their annual meeting and meteorological technology seminar to discuss further co-operation and share research result.

Significant achievements have been accomplished in the past 25 years through seamless co-operation among the three meteorological authorities. In addition to establishing automatic weather stations and a lightning location network, they have also developed the Greater Pearl River Delta Weather Website (http://www.prdweather.net/index.htm), which was launched today. The website, which integrates weather information from the three places into a one-stop portal, will provide weather warnings and forecasts of the 11 cities in the region, boosting the local weather service and improving public safety.

Deputy Director of the Guangdong Meteorological Bureau, Mr Xu Yongke, said, "A solid foundation between the three parties has been established during 25 years of co-operation. We are confident that our cooperation will be further strengthened, contributing to disaster prevention and mitigation in the Pearl River Delta."

Director of the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, Dr Fong Soi-kun, said, "There has been a wealth of co-operation and exchange in many aspects of meteorological operations and research among the three parties. Building on this foundation, we hope to strengthen co-operation further to provide even better meteorological services for the general public."

Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Dr Lee Boon-ying, said, "The long history of cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao's meteorological authorities contributes much to raising the quality of our weather services. The launch of the Greater Pearl River Delta Weather Website clearly demonstrates the fruitful collaboration among the three services, and will bring much convenience to the increasing numbers of cross-border commuters and school children."

Cheung Sze-ki, a student from the Elegantia College who frequently travels across the border to school, said that the website was very useful for obtaining the latest weather information, so that she could be well prepared when travelling to and from school. The website also has a mobile version (http://www.prdweather.net/pda_index.htm) which allows her to use her mobile phone for browsing the website anytime and anywhere. Vice-Principal of the Elegantia College, Mr Chow Kam-ming, also agreed that through the website, his school could obtain the latest weather warnings in the Greater Pearl River Delta so as to make the appropriate arrangements.
