Visibility meters cover all of Victoria Harbour

| The Hong Kong Observatory has installed an automatic visibility meter at Sai Wan Ho to monitor visibility of the eastern part of Victoria Harbour round-the-clock. From today (22 December), real-time data is made available on the webpage: http://www.weather.gov.hk/wxinfo/ts/display_element_vis_e.htm. The eastern Victoria Harbour is a major waterway of Hong Kong and is also the only passageway for vessels navigating in and out of Lei Yue Mun. The visibility meter at Sai Wan Ho provides real-time visibility data for the eastern part of Victoria Harbour. Together with the visibility meter at Central, which began operation in 2006, visibility of all of Victoria Harbour can now be monitored effectively. This has further enhanced the Observatory's service for the marine community and the public. Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr WM Leung, said, "Visibility will be reduced in rain, fog and haze, etc. Eastern Victoria Harbour is prone to reduced visibility as a result of sea fog during the fog season. The new visibility meter at Sai Wan Ho will help to better monitor the changes in visibility and thereby enhancing marine and public safety. People can also access the Observatory's webpage to obtain more weather information to help plan different outdoor activities." Senior Marine Officer of the Marine Department, Mr CT Lai, welcomed the Observatory's initiative to provide real-time visibility data at Sai Wan Ho. "The visibility data is of vital importance to the safe navigation of ships," he said. The Observatory has visibility meters at four locations - Chek Lap Kok, Waglan Island, Central and Sai Wan Ho.
