The automatic weather station for Kwun Tong District was opened today (21 October). The public can now access the latest temperature information in Kwun Tong by a variety of means, including the Hong Kong Observatory's website and Dial-a-Weather service.
The new weather station is located inside the Radio Monitoring Unit of the Office of the Telecommunications Authority at the Ngau Tau Kok service reservoir. Its opening ceremony was jointly officiated by the Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council, Mr Chan Chung-bun; Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Dr Lee Boon-ying; District Officer of Kwun Tong District, Ms Wong Po-lin; and Assistant Director of the Office of the Telecommunications Authority, Mr So Tat-foon.
Dr Lee said, "The setting up of the weather station in Kwun Tong under the Observatory's 'One District One Station' initiative would not have been possible without the support and co-operation of the Kwun Tong District Council and the Office of the Telecommunications Authority. This initiative marks the close collaboration between the Observatory and the district communities, allowing more comprehensive weather information to be provided to meet the needs of the public."
Mr Chan welcomed the establishment of the automatic weather station in Kwun Tong. "Kwun Tong is one of the earliest areas to be developed in Hong Kong. In addition to many housing estates, there are major exhibition and shopping centres as well as tourist hot spots such as Lei Yue Mun and Cha Kwo Ling in the district. The temperature information from the new weather station will keep residents and visitors informed of the latest weather conditions here," he said.
Ms Wong said she was pleased to see the successful development of the Observatory's 'One District One Station' initiative. "Kwun Tong District Office will continue to actively support the improvement of various government services in the district," she said.
Mr So said, "We are delighted to make available a suitable location for the Observatory to establish an automatic weather station in Kwun Tong for providing the latest weather information to more than 580,000 residents in the district."
