Observatory provides more real-time weather photos - overlooking Hong Kong South

| The Hong Kong Observatory has further enhanced its regional weather information dissemination service by adding to its website today (30 September) real-time weather photos of Hong Kong South. These photos would help locals and tourists going sightseeing in the southern part of Hong Kong Island such as Aberdeen and Lamma Island better plan their visits. The camera for taking these weather photos is installed inside the German Swiss International School (GSIS) at the Peak, which also takes up its maintenance, while the Observatory provides technical support. This is another example of co-operation between the Observatory and members of the "Community Weather Information Network", demonstrating the viability of this new approach adopted by the Observatory to further enhance its provision of regional weather information. This mode of co-operation not only provides a more cost-effective way of delivering weather information services to the public, but also nurtures a sense of satisfaction on the part of the students in their active contribution to the maintenance work. Head of Learning and Teaching Technologies of GSIS, Mr Graeme Deuchars, said, "We are very pleased to co-operate with the Observatory. The southern side of Hong Kong Island offers spectacular scenery and a host of tourist attractions. We believe the real-time weather photos will facilitate tourists' visit to these scenic spots and we are also delighted to share these beautiful photos with the public. "The weather photos not only enable students and teachers to observe the current weather conditions, such as cloud amount, cloud height and visibility, but also stimulate students' interest in exploring more about weather phenomena." With the commencement of this service, real-time weather photos of 12 different places in Hong Kong are now available on the Observatory's website. The Observatory will continue to enhance its public weather services through the provision of more weather photos and information of other suitable places. Real-time photos of Hong Kong South are available on the "Regional Weather" webpage (http://www.weather.gov.hk/wxinfo/ts/webcam/GSI_e_realtime.htm) or PDA webpage (http://pda.hko.gov.hk/wxphotoe_gsi.htm) . Photos taken between 7am and 7pm are updated every 15 minutes. |
