Hong Kong Observatory launches new weather icons

The Hong Kong Observatory is launching a new set of weather icons today (6 February 2007).

The existing weather icons shown on the Observatory's website have been in use for many years, the purpose of which is to communicate abstract weather information through simple and elegant graphics. In order to enhance the quality of the icons, make them more effective in representing diverse weather situations, and to standardize the icons being used for Local Weather Forecast and 7-day Weather Forecast, the Observatory has adopted a new set of weather icons as shown in Figure 1.

Some of the new icons were adopted from the winning designs of the Weather Icon Design Contest held last year, while others were designed by staff of the Observatory.

The new weather icons are now being used on the Observatory's website. They are also included in the various weather bulletins disseminated to the media and special users.
