“MyObservatory” is a personalized location-specific weather app developed by the Hong Kong Observatory since 2010
The “MyObservatory” provides latest weather conditions, including the actual weather data reported by weather stations nearby, location-based lightning and rainfall forecast for the coming one or two hours, location based weather forecast for 9 days, weather warnings, and a suite of information service provided by the Observatory. The latest addition of “Dr. Tin” chatbot service provides information including local weather conditions, forecast, warnings, tides, Hong Kong standard time, as well as weather forecast, sunrise, and sunset times of major world cities in the form of question and answer.

Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2022
The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) won the Smart Living (Smart Lifestyle) Silver Award of the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2022 with mobile app “MyObservatory”. The app is equipped with “Location-based Rain and Lightning Forecast” service, which employed state-of-the-art weather nowcast and data compression technologies with personalised push notifications. The new function “My Weather Observation” adopted a zero-knowledge approach and enabled sharing of crowdsourced reports while respecting user privacy. The close integration of the app and HKO’s Chatbot “Dr. Tin” also brought an elevated level of user experiences.
WMO International Weather Apps Awards 2020
The “MyObservatory” won in the “Public weather forecasts and information - information content” category and earned an honourable mention in the “Specialised apps award - weather warnings” category at the WMO International Weather Apps Awards 2020 (WIWAA). The WMO is a specialised agency in weather and climate under the United Nations. The WMO WIWAA was organised for the first time in this year to recognise well-designed mobile applications for providing reliable weather and climate information. The competition received more than 110 entries from all over the world.
Certificate of Merit prize in the category “Public Sector Distinction”
“MyObservatory” won the Certificate of Merit prize in the category “Public Sector Distinction” of the Asia Smart App Awards 2020. The Asia Smart App Award was organised by the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) sponsored by the Create Hong Kong Office of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The award aims at recognising the excellence of innovative smart app development and providing a sharing platform for the smart app developers in the Asian regions to further encourage the development of smart app.
Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2017
The Hong Kong Observatory won the Certificate of Merit (Consumer Solutions) prize in the Best Mobile Apps Award in the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2017 with its mobile app “MyObservatory”. The Hong Kong ICT Awards aims at recognising and promoting outstanding ICT inventions and applications, thereby encouraging innovation and excellence among Hong Kong’s talents and enterprise in their constant pursuit of creative and better solutions to meet business and social needs. The awards were presented at Cyberport on 30 March.
Top Ten Healthy Mobile Phone/Tablet Apps in 2016
The Observatory mobile app “MyObservatory” was awarded “Top Ten Healthy Mobile Phone/Tablet Apps in 2016”. The event was organized by the Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (OFNAA), and co-organized by the Education Bureau, the Committee on Home-School Co-operation, the Hong Kong Internet Service Providers Association, and the Radio Television Hong Kong. It aimed at promoting the message of “Healthy Information, Healthy Mind”. The awardees were selected via public online voting and by an adjudication panel.
Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2013
The MyObservatory mobile app won the Certificate of Merit and the Special Mention (Public Sector Information) prize in the Best Mobile Apps Award in the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2013. The Hong Kong ICT Awards recognize, promote and commend the excellent achievements to which ICT professionals and organizations contribute. The awards were presented at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 8 April.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) won five awards in the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2011. The awards were presented in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 15 April.
