Only one tropical cyclone occurred over the western North Pacific and South China Sea in December 2008.

Dolphin formed as a tropical depression over the western North Pacific about 390 km west-southwest of Guam on 12 December. Moving west-northwestwards, Dolphin intensified into a tropical storm that evening. Dolphin moved generally westwards for the following two days and intensified into a severe tropical storm on 15 December while it turned to move northwards. It intensified further into a typhoon that evening. Dolphin moved northeastwards on 16 December and weakened into a severe tropical storm the next day. It weakened into a tropical storm on 18 December and became an extra-tropical cyclone over the western North Pacific south of Japan that evening.
