Director's Trip to Beijing

Director of the Hong Kong Observatory Lee Boon-ying and Assistant Director Shun Chi-ming visited the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on 30 November and 1 December 2009 respectively. This is the first time that the Director visited his counterparts in Beijing after he assumed duty in April 2009.

During the visit to CMA, they met the Administrator Zheng Guo-guang and visited a number of operational units including the National Meteorological Centre, National Satellite Meteorological Centre, National Meteorological Information Centre, Meteorological Observation Centre of CMA and Huafeng Group of Meteorological Audio and Video Information. Afterwards, they visited the Beijing Meteorological Bureau headed by Director Xie Pu and also learned about the specialized weather services it provided for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

In the visit to ATMB/CAAC, they met the senior management including Deputy Director-General Gao Yi, Director of Meteorological Division Chen Bao and Deputy Director-General of Civil Aviation Meteorological Centre Zou Jian-hua. They visited the Civil Aviation Meteorological Centre, North China Regional ATMB Meteorological Centre and Beijing Area Control Centre, and established the direction for further enhancing cooperation and exchange in the future. In particular, they participated in the newly implemented nation-wide weather conference and were impressed by the professionalism of the aviation forecasters and the new development in aviation weather services.
