The in-house developed expert system “Intelligent Meteorological Monitoring Assistant” (IMMA) of the Hong Kong Observatory won the Certificate of Merit in the Smart Business (Solution for Business and Public Sector Enterprise) Award in the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Award 2018 . The awards aim at recognizing and promoting outstanding ICT inventions and applications in Hong Kong and were presented at Hong Kong Science Park on 28 March.

In the era of Big Data, weather forecasters at the Observatory are often confronted with ever-increasing information overload. IMMA was developed aptly to help face this challenge. Since its operation in 2015, IMMA has been serving as an untiring assistant to the forecasters at the bench, automatically processing weather big data and translating them into intelligent advices round the clock for reference by forecasters, enhancing the effectiveness of the Observatory’s weather services.
