12 March 2012
An award presentation ceremony for the Best Practice Award on e-Education 2011, an initiative fully supported by the Education Bureau, was held on 21 February 2012. The Community Weather Information Network (Co-WIN), jointly set up by the Hong Kong Observatory and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, came out on top and was honoured with the Most Popular Award in the Open Stream. Co-WIN's achievement in promoting e-Education on campuses was recognized and praised.Co-WIN has developed an Online Educational Resources Platform ( http://weather2.ap.polyu.edu.hk/cowinwiki/index.php/Main_Page ) which enables experience sharing among teachers and students. Contents include basic knowledge on the theme "Weather and the Environment" prepared by the Observatory, and sample teaching plans and activities, students' presentation templates, as well as training manuals and lecture notes on weather related topics prepared by the Polytechnic University.
Recently, Co-WIN has launched the Community Weather Observing Scheme (CWOS) to provide an opportunity for community members of all ages and backgrounds to broaden their knowledge of weather and climate through first-hand experience in carrying out weather observations. The scheme fits in well with the new Senior Secondary Curriculum, especially for schools offering "Weather and Climate" as an elective geography topic for their students, and also encourages community participation and learning in making weather observations.
