Director of the Observatory officiated at the opening ceremony of Automatic Weather Station for the Elders

15 March 2010

Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Dr. B.Y. Lee, visited the HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre (Dr. Lam Chik Suen District Elderly Community Centre) on 8 March 2010 and officiated at the opening ceremony of the Centre's "Automatic Weather Station for the Elders" with the Director of the Centre, Mrs. Yuk Fung Yin King.

In order to arouse the awareness of the elders on daily weather changes, in particular during cold winter or very hot summer months, the Centre joined the Community Weather Information Network (Co-WIN) in September 2008 and formed the "Interest Group on Digital Weather". Members of the group actively participated in a number of activities organized by Co-WIN. With the assistance of the Observatory and the Department of Applied Physics of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a station named "Automatic Weather Station for the Elders" was set up at the Centre in May 2009. The ceremony was to officially open the station and provide an opportunity for the elders to share their experience in weather observation.

Dr. B.Y. Lee also participated in the experience sharing session of the programme - "Freedom of information, pioneer in technology" launched by the Centre under the auspices of the Digital Solidarity Fund. During the session, the elders shared their experience in the learning of information technology and their appreciation in using computers, as well as demonstrated the computer game that they made during the "Translating Computer Software in Chinese" programme.
