The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN) visited the Observatory

1 December 2010

The Master of GAPAN, Capt. Michael Fopp from the United Kingdom, and their members visited the Observatory on 29 November 2010. In the past years, GAPAN has been actively participating in the Observatory's liaison group on aviation weather services and provided valuable suggestions, including the booklet on "Windshear and Turbulence in Hong Kong - information for pilots" which was jointly published with the Observatory and the International Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations (IFALPA). They made a tour to the Airport Meteorological Office and LIght Detection and Ranging System (LIDAR) at the Hong Kong International Airport, and to the Central Forecasting Office and History Room at the Observatory's Headquarters. The visitors showed great interest in the big contrast of the antique weather instruments in the History Room and the most advanced aviation weather services, such as the world-first LIDAR Windshear Alerting System (LIWAS), witnessing the long history of the Observatory's developments.
