Anemometer design competition - wind tunnel test
30 April 2009
The anemometer design competition jointly organized by the Observatory and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hong Kong for primary and secondary school students is approaching its final stage. The deadline for submission of entries is at the end of April 2009. To enable the students to test and calibrate their anemometers more precisely, the Observatory specially constructed a wind tunnel which could simulate different wind speeds for testing the anemometers. More than 10 teams participated in the wind tunnel tests held on 19 and 26 April. They will use the test results to improve their anemometers. In addition to the accuracy of wind direction and speed measurement, creativity of the design, aesthetic aspects of the anemometer and the students presentation skills are also the judging criteria of the competition. The winning teams will be announced in an award presentation ceremony in early July.
