It is the honour of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) to be awarded the "Website of Merit 2005". This campaign is organized by the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association and the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority, together with the Education and Manpower Bureau, Committee on Home-School Co-operation and Radio Television Hong Kong. The event aims to encourage Internet Content Providers and Internet Service Providers in developing more web pages and websites with healthy contents, and also encourages the youths to browse healthy websites and the right use of the Internet.

The organizer of this event received over 2,000 entries, there were a total of 421 websites for election. After months of voting, a total of 18,380 citizens made over 120 thousands of votes. Finally, the HKO's website was voted as one of the eleven websites of merit.

On the award presentation day (21 January 2006), HKO set up a booth with demonstration on the contents of the HKO's website. A computer game named "Rainstorm Shooter" was developed for this purpose to familiarize viewers with the rainstorm warning symbols. A simple experiment was also set up to explain the formation and features of tornados. Both attracted many participants.

Our staff is highly encouraged by the award. HKO will continue to provide quality web contents to serve the public.
