The Hong Kong Observatory Open Day 2016

5 April 2016

The Hong Kong Observatory Open Day 2016 was one of the highlight events of the "Appreciate Hong Kong" campaign. It took place on 19 and 20 March with over 17,300 visitors attending the event. Under this year's World Meteorological Day theme of "Hotter, Drier, Wetter‧Face the Future", a seminar on climate change was organized on the morning of 19 March at Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association. Over 400 people attended the seminar, mostly young people from youth uniformed groups and organizations among the 18 districts and from "Child Development Fund", as well as members from "Friends of the Observatory", "Hong Kong Meteorological Society" and "Community Weather Observing Scheme".

The Open Day exhibition at the Observatory Headquarters also focused on the global and local impacts of climate change, and illustrated how the latest technology could be applied to provide various services in response to the challenges posed by global warming and extreme weather. During the Open Day, the Observatory's TV weather presenters gave live demonstration of weather reporting, while the Director of the Hong Kong Observatory attended autograph sessions and posed for photos with visitors. Dr Tin, the Observatory mascot, was also a much sought-after target for photo requests. Apart from the Observatory staff, more than 80 volunteers from "Friends of the Observatory" offered support and assistance as goodwill ambassadors in warmly greeting the visitors.
