The Observatory Enhances Weather Services for Fishermen

22 September 2010

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) continues to strive for better weather services, including the provision of weather information for fishing operations. Mr Shun Chi-ming, Assistant Director, together with Mr Lee Kwok-lun, Scientific Officer and Mr Ng Moon-chiu, Chief Experimental Officer met the representatives of the Hong Kong Fishery Alliance and the Hong Kong Fishermen Consortium separately discussing the enhancement of weather services for the fishermen earlier (on 16 August).

All participants actively exchanged opinions openly and generously during the meetings. Representatives of the fishermen appraised the weather services provided by HKO such as the weather forecast for the South China coastal waters, forecast tracks of tropical cyclones, satellite and radar imageries were all helpful for their planning of operation schedule.

The fishermen welcomed HKO's proposal on the development of a fishermen portal website and the publication of a pamphlet on weather for fishermen. We also introduced our latest weather services on web and demonstrated the use of mobile phone to browse weather photos and information of automatic weather stations. This will facilitate the fishermen in understanding the latest weather situations in Hong Kong and adjacent areas before their operation.

Besides, the Observatory will continue to promote new weather services to the fishermen regularly through the training courses organized by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
