6 April 2023
Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) Open Day 2023 was successfully held on March 25th and 26th, adopting the theme of World Meteorological Day this year, “The Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations”. Apart from celebrating HKO’s 140th anniversary, it also provides the public with a better understanding of HKO’s work and its developments over the years. The public response was overwhelming, with over ten thousand admission tickets were distributed. The Open Day featured various games and exhibitions, as well as live demonstrations of weather reporting by TV weather presenters. Visitors gained a better understanding of HKO’s services and different weather warnings and signals in the Open day. Mr Chan Pak-wai, Director of the HKO, and the HKO Mascot, “Dr Tin”, interacted and took photos with visitors.
HKO also invited uniformed groups and communities from different sectors to the Open Day, including organizing talks on HKO’s careers and the impact of climate change for participants of the "Strive and Rise Programme”. It aims to promote public awareness on climate change and have a better understanding of HKO’s work.
Besides HKO colleagues, over 60 volunteers from "Friends of the Observatory" acted as goodwill ambassadors to greet the visitors, contributing to the smooth operation of the 2-day event.
