Display Area 14 : Evolution of Weather Warnings: Progressing with Time
Exhibit 8
This is a miniature of the Hong Kong Observatory headquarters from the 1950s. Clearly visible is the signal mast for the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals with the Strong Monsoon Signal upon it. The signals made in iron were hoisted high up the mast, making it visible to both ships in the harbour and the general public for the purpose of disseminating typhoon warnings. With the popularity of electronic media, the public no longer requires line-of-sight access to information on typhoons via the hoisting of signals. In 2001, the last tropical cyclone warning signal station at Cheung Chau was closed down, and since then, the signals have been "issued", not "hoisted".
