China Seas Storm Signal Code, 1920. Stated at the bottom of the diagram is the remark that these storm signals were used at the Hong Kong Observatory. In 1913, the Zi-ka-wei Observatory (present-day Xujiahui Observatory) in Shanghai adopted the signals on display here to represent the information relating to tropical cyclones. In 1918, this system was announced for use by other East Asian coastal ports. The Hong Kong Observatory adopted this non-local typhoon warning signal system in 1920, in parallel with the local typhoon warning signals.
