The Hong Kong Observatory is responsible for monitoring and forecasting weather, as well as issuing warnings on weather-related hazards. The Observatory also monitors and assesses radiation levels in Hong Kong, and provides other meteorological and geophysical services to meet the needs of the public and the shipping, aviation, industrial and engineering sectors. To ensure quality of services, the Observatory continues to strengthen quality management and acquired the first ISO 9001 certificate as early as in 2002. Today, the Observatory has received a total of six (6) ISO 9001 certificates, covering public weather services, aviation weather services, radiation and meteorological measurement services, ambient gamma radiation monitoring service, automatic wind measurement services and automatic regional temperature measurement services^[1]。

ISO 9001 is a quality management tool developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Based on the principle of "Plan, Do, Check, Act" Cycle, ISO 9001 enables enterprises to ensure the quality of products and services. To acquire and maintain ISO 9001 certificates, enterprises shall fully comply with the requirements of ISO 9001. In addition to passing annual internal audits conducted by qualified colleagues, the services must also be re-certified by independent certification bodies once every three years.

The ISO 9001 certifications help the Observatory elevate the quality of services, enhance public and customer satisfaction, strengthen internal management, ensure compliance with relevant regulations, and enhance corporate image. To further strengthen quality management, in December 2019 the Observatory established a new division to coordinate the implementation and development of quality management, in addition to handling international affairs.
