Historic 1961 Float-Type Tide Gauge Finds New Home at Hong Kong Maritime Museum

Chan Ngo-hin

The Hong Kong Observatory has loaned a historic 1961 float-type tide gauge to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum for display. This tide gauge, which operated at the Tai Po Kau Tide Gauge Station from 1962 to 2008, is the oldest of its kind in the Observatory's collection. Initially, the instrument purely operated through mechanical components to measure sea levels; but it was later upgraded with electronic components to enable real-time data monitoring.

Don't forget to check out this remarkable piece of history firsthand on your next visit to the Maritime Museum!
