Briefing Airlines the Latest Development of Windshear Alerting Services for HKIA

The Aviation Branch of the Observatory organized briefings for airlines on the latest development of windshear and turbulence alerting servings every year.

To attract more audience, this year's briefing (4 Apr 2007) was held at the Auditorium of the Cathay Pacific City. It was well received with more than 70 participants, including local and overseas airline, International Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations (IFALPA), Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN) and Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) representatives, the highest turnout so far (Fig. 1). Mr PW Chan briefed the audience about the latest development of the Observatory's LIWAS (LIdar Windshear Alerting System), the future work of the windshear and turbulence altering services including uplinking windshear alerts to the cockpit.

The briefing was considered to be successful with many compliments received from the participants. Some airline representatives indicated that they would like to establish tighter connection with the Observatory with a view to improving further the windshear and turbulence alerting services over HKIA.
