Participation in Flight Standards Seminar

Messrs. C.M. Shun and C.M. Cheng of the Observatory participated in the Flight Standards Seminar for Asia-Pacific Region Civil Aviation Authorities held on 15-17 June 2004 in Hong Kong. The seminar was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for promoting the utilization of new technologies in aviation.

At the seminar, Mr. Shun was invited to present a talk on the windshear and turbulence warning system for the Hong Kong International Airport. The application of new technologies, especially the Doppler radar and LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) technologies, was highlighted. At the end of the talk, feedback was received from pilot and airline representatives on the desire to uplink windshear information directly to aircraft. The Observatory will take this into consideration in the planning for new weather services for aviation under the banner of the satellite-based "CNS/ATM system".
