Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) MET applications in development

Moving towards paperless cockpit is an inevitable trend in aviation industry. To keep abreast of the latest development, the Observatory is collaborating with a major airline in Hong Kong to develop EFB MET applications. The first application to be launched will be on iOS platform.

The App provides the latest weather information along the flight trajectory on an easy-to-manipulate user interface for pilots. Based on the latest information exchange technologies and standards in alignment with the industry’s Aviation System Block Upgrade (ASBU) methodology, the App aims at ensuring safe, economical and efficient aircraft operations as pursued by Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP).

The App will be launched by the end of this year. Further collaboration from other interested airlines is most welcomed.

One of the benefits of using an EFB MET application is that it allows the pilots to visualize hazards or potential hazards with ease which is especially important for busy cockpits. In this example, one can quickly realize that cruising at flight level FL340 could be a better choice in view of turbulence avoidance than FL270-320.
