A Virtual Tour to The World's First LIDAR at The Airport

Here is the basic principle of LIDAR operation:

The LIDAR emits infrared light and receives the light reflected from aerosols, i.e. tiny particles in the air.  The measurement of aerosol movement, which represents the wind, is explained in the diagram on the right.

The shift in frequency of the return echo is related to the movement of aerosols. The faster the aerosols move (i.e. the wind), the larger frequency shift will be. This enables the wind speed to be measured.
