Anemometer-based windshear and turbulence detection

The Hong Kong Observatory makes use of the wind data from anemometers around the HKIA to detect terrain-induced low-level windshear. The difference in wind speed and direction measured at adjacent anemometers is used to determine the location and magnitude of the horizontal windshear in the arrival and departure corridors.

On the other hand, terrain-induced turbulence is determined by the ambient wind speed and direction and their fluctuations measured by anemometers in exposed areas.

The wind speed and direction measurements by anemometers in the figure (figure 1) to the right are used to determine the windshear in the arrival and departure corridors.
