Tai Mo Shan weather radar: over 24 years of long and meritorious service
In 1999, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) installed a Doppler weather radar at Tai Mo Shan, the highest peak in Hong Kong (Figure 1). In the past 24 years, the Tai Mo Shan weather radar (TMSWR) has faithfully monitored various inclement weather that affected Hong Kong including thunderstorms, rainstorms and tropical cyclones.
In November 2023, the existing TMSWR will be dismantled and replaced by a new radar with more advanced functions and better performance. We hereby pay tribute to all HKO colleagues who have contributed over the years in maintaining the TMSWR to ensure the continuous support of HKO’s weather forecasting and warning services (Figure 2).
With the advance of radar technology, we expect the new radar will deliver higher quality radar products to meet the development needs of HKO, bringing its weather monitoring capabilities to a new level.
