"Cool Met Stuff" : Why is daytime always longer than nighttime in summer?

In Hong Kong, daylight hours in summer can be more than two hours longer than in winter. Why are daytime and nighttime in a day not equal in duration? Why are there even polar days and polar nights within the polar circles? These phenomena are all related to the axial tilt of the earth.
