"Cool Met Stuff" : Mars Opposition

The night sky above Hong Kong will be quite eventful during the overnight period of July 27 (Friday). First, a Mars perihelic opposition, which occurs only every 15 to 17 years, will be visible if weather permits. During Mars opposition, Mars, the Earth and the Sun lie on a straight line. As Mars will also be near its perihelion, the closest point of its orbit to the Sun, it is called the Mars perihelic opposition. Mars will appear brighter than usual. Besides, the second total lunar eclipse of the year will occur in the small hours of the next day. It will last for 104 minutes, the longest one this century.
