"Architecture Tour" at Tai Po Kau Tide Gauge Station

The reconstruction of the Tai Po Kau Tide Gauge Station of the Hong Kong Observatory was recently honoured with the "HKIA Award for Small Project – President's Prize" at the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Annual Awards 2025.  To mark this achievement and foster professional exchange within the industry, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Civil Engineering and Development Department, and the Hong Kong Observatory jointly organised a guided “Architectural Walk” on 11 July 2026.

At the beginning of the event, Ms. Corrin Chan of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Mr. Fong Hok-shing, Michael, Director of Civil Engineering and Development Department, and Mr. Chan Sai-tick, Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, delivered welcoming remarks to kick off the guided tour.  The project team then led participants on a site visit and technical sharing session. Through this guided tour, participants not only learned about the meteorological instruments installed at the tide station, but also gained insight into how the design of the new tide gauge station uses the imagery of an iceberg to raise public awareness about global warming, the process of transforming the design concept into a physical structure, and the vital role the tide gauge station plays in safeguarding public safety.
