Observatory’s colleagues lecturing on satellite data processing for the international meteorological community

30 December 2025

Dr Tang Wai-ho and Dr Ng Yin-lam Danice, Scientific Officers of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), conducted training in the virtual workshop “Python for Satellite Data Processing and Visualization” convened by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on 10 December 2025. During the workshop, the two scientific officers led hands-on sessions on decoding satellite data, visualising geostationary satellite imagery, and integrating AI techniques into programming workflows. They also shared their experience in applying these tools in operational settings, highlighting key lessons learned and offering practical tips for adapting workflows across different regional contexts.

The workshop aimed to build practical, shared skills in using open-source tools for operational weather analysis, bringing together around 250 meteorological personnel and data users from WMO Regional Associations II (Asia) and V (South-West Pacific). Feedback from participants underscored a strong regional demand for collaborative, practice-oriented training. Many highlighted the benefits gained from interacting with speakers during the discussion sessions.
