Observatory’s colleague conducted technical exchange on aviation meteorology in Europe

29 December 2025

Dr. Danice Yin-lam Ng, Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) participated as an invited panel speaker at the international conference “Managing the Impact of Weather on Air and Space Launch Operations” held in Brussels on 12–13 November 2025. Organised by the French National Air and Space Academy, the conference brought together experts from meteorological services, air traffic management, airlines, and research institutions to discuss weather impacts on aviation operations, innovative forecasting tools, relevant decision-making processes and future research directions to enhance weather resilience in aviation and space operations.

Outside the conference, Dr. Ng also undertook knowledge-exchange visits to EUROCONTROL in Brussels and Météo-France in Toulouse on 11 and 14 November 2025. These side meetings provided valuable opportunities to understand the recent developments in aviation meteorology in Europe, including enhanced coordination between meteorologists and air traffic controllers, the integration of high-resolution weather data into operational planning, and collaborative approaches to cross-border weather forecasting.

This trip to Europe underscores the importance of international collaboration for advancing aviation weather services. The insights gained will benefit HKO’s ongoing efforts to enhance aviation weather services in support of safe and efficient air operations in the region.
